Derived from two Swahili words "Ma" which is a word used to denote plural form of something and "Tatu" which means "three". It came into active use when the fare for these vehicles was a mere thirty cents in the late 60s. The fare was usually paid in three ten cent coins hence the use of the word "ma-tatu".
